Before Krampus arrives, you hear him. The deep, discordant peal of his bell cuts through the
winter night — not a joyful sound, but a portent. A deliberate announcement. He knows where
you are. He is coming. You still have a moment.

In Alpine tradition, the bell was both warning and taunt. Krampus rang it not because he was required to — but because he wanted you to know. The anticipation was part of the punishment. Most people, when they heard that bell, changed nothing at all.

The Ruten — birch branches bound together — is the most ancient and universal of Krampus’s instruments. It appears in every depiction across centuries of Alpine folklore, from Austrian woodcuts to Bavarian greeting cards.

The switch is the most common fate because most naughty children simply need correction. Not destruction. Not imprisonment. Just the sting of consequence — swift, educational, and
ultimately forgettable. Until next year. This is not a tragedy. It is a Tuesday.

THE ARTIST BEHIND THE COINS

THE ARTIST

ANGELA RIZZA
The coin designs were commissioned from Angela Rizza, a Hudson Valley illustrator whose annual Krampus paintings have earned her a devoted following among folklore enthusiasts and dark art collectors alike. Rizza holds a BFA in Illustration from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, where she later returned as an adjunct professor. Her process — hand-inked with brush and pen, finished digitally — carries the lineage of classical storybook illustration: dense with line, alive with texture, rooted in the natural world. Her client work spans DK Publishing, the Criterion Collection, Hallmark, and Cricket Magazine. Her coloring book The Book of Beasts drew over 100,000 appreciations on Behance. She is currently based in the Hudson Valley, where she tattoos full time at Iron Butterfly in Mahopac, NY. She was the natural choice for the Krampus coins. Her Krampus paintings don’t render him as
cartoon villain — they restore his mythological gravity. That same quality is pressed into every relief here: the weight of the birch bundle, the menace of the chains, the finality of the basket.
